Rico Payton made a significant impact in college football, starting his career at Southern Illinois before transferring to Pittsburgh State. During his standout season with the Gorillas, he recorded 35 tackles (23 solo), 4 interceptions, and 16 pass break-ups. His exceptional performance earned him a spot as a 2023 NCAA Division II 2nd Team All-American by the AFCA and a nomination for the Division II 2023 Cliff Harris Award for Small College Defensive Player of the Year. A two-time All-MIAA Selection, Payton amassed 64 total tackles (46 solo), 1.5 TFL, four interceptions, 26 passes defended, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery over his career with the Gorillas.
